Growing Practices

Seeds of Senecio Cineraria are sown in nursery beds that are filled with seed compost. The seed compost is prepared by mixing one part each of garden soil, coarse sand, farmyard manure and leaf-mould. Before sowing, nursery bed is sterilized with formalin solution and then covered with a polythene sheet for 45 hours for preventing the prevalence of seed borne diseases. Later the polythene sheet is removed; soil is dried and then seeds are sown. Sometimes fungicidal treatment of seeds is recommended to prevent damping off disease of seedlings. Since seeds of cineraria germinate only in dark, cover the nursery beds with thick mulch of finely sieved leaf mould until seeds germinate and then remove the mulching after seed germination is complete. Seeds are sown in rows spaced 6 cm apart and soon after sowing, light watering of cineraria plants is done. Nursery beds should always be kept weed-free.

Transplanting of Senecio Cineraria is normally done at 4-leaf stage. When seedlings are of 4-leaf stage irrigation of nursery beds is withheld for one or two days in order to harden off the seedlings prior to their transplanting. Seedlings should be transplanted in the evening when temperature is very low. After transplanting, seedlings should be watered lightly twice a day, early morning and late evening for about a week or until seedlings get established in the field. Recommended spacing for Senecio Cineraria is 45cm × 45cm.

Field bed is prepared by mixing FYM (farm yard manure) or Compost with the top soil. Rate of application is approximately 3 kilograms per square meter of land. A basal dose of chemical fertilizers is also recommended at the time of field preparation at the rate of 10 g urea, 60–120g superphosphate and 30–60g muriate of potash for a square meter of land. Application of another 10 g of urea is recommended one month after transplantation.

Pot-Grown Cineraria Plants

If Senecio Cineraria are grown in pots, chemical fertilizers should never be used. Organic manures and fertilizers are recommended for all pot grown cineraria plants. These organic manures and fertilizers should be supplied to the pot-grown cineraria plants through liquid feeding. The liquid manure for cineraria plants is prepared by fermenting approximately 2 kilograms of each of fresh cow dung and oil cake in 10 liters of water for one week. It is diluted and then sieved with the help of a muslin cloth for the application @ 500 ml to 1 liter per pot at weekly intervals. Liquid feeding is recommended for obtaining maximum yield of cineraria flowers.

After transplanting, field beds are weeded, hoed and watered regularly. Pinching should be practiced for both field-grown and pot-grown Senecio Cineraria for making the plants bushy. Disbudding is practiced by reducing the number of buds/ stem if large flowers are desired.

For filed-grown Senecio Cineraria, light watering is done soon after transplanting. Watering of cineraria plants is done twice a day for about a week or until the cineraria plants get thoroughly established in the field. Afterwards watering of cineraria plants is done at an interval of once or twice a week. During summer season, watering of cineraria plants should be done at weekly intervals while it is done at an interval of 10–12 days during winters. Watering of cineraria plants during rainy season depends upon prevailing weather conditions. Potted Senecio Cineraria need daily watering during summer, whereas during winter watering of cineraria plants is done on alternate days.

Flowers of Senecio Cineraria are cut either late in the afternoon or very early in the morning. After harvesting, cineraria flowers are put in a bucket of water filled up to one-fourth of the volume as it helps in their recovery from the shock of harvesting. Only the freshly opened flowers should be harvested as freshness enhances their shelf-life. Proper postharvest management is necessary for prolonging the vase-life of cineraria flowers. Cineraria flowers are graded according to stem length, flower size, flower shape, flower color and freshness. Since perishability of flowers are high, cineraria flowers are mostly marketed in local markets.
